Ancient warriors, modern rockers and shape-shifting time dervishes collide again, in an upcoming digital and print comic book series: "Rock On Genghis Khan", based on Carli Castellani's rock opera of the same name.

Drawing from a spectrum of rock and world music influences, the arts collaborative Status Hat Productions, directed by Carli Castellani and Tim Castellani, are bringing a mixed-media comic to the world through an interactive website, debuting December, 2008, and in special print editions.

The comic book series coincides with an expanded plot, 6 new songs and new recordings from the original score.

"There is nothing to see here, but time and space having a laugh..."

(Supsupsup - Song of the Time Dervishes)

AND: Process, Revisited
Creating Games

Creating "Games of Sticks and Stones..." required about 3 months. We brainstormed possible games, tested and developed 5 games, and transformed a spectrum of raw materials into the game pieces and landscape. Most of the component pieces were put through a several step process to create the final look of the installation. The slideshow below shows some of that work as it was in progress. Carli Castellani

Speaking of Puppets...
Creating Magic for 70+ Years -- A Puppet Theatre Turns of Age

The Tatar State Theater of Puppets, Aekiyat, celebrated its 70th year anniversary in 2004, while Carli Castellani was a resident artist in Kazan. It is a leading puppet theater in the Russian Federation and employs about 100 workers, about 25 being actors who speak both Russian and Tatar fluently. The theater is also a member of the International Union of the Workers of the Theater of Puppets (UNIMA).

Tatar Puppet Theater - 70th Anniversary Book

The theater presents plays based on their culture, from fairy tales to historical and contemporary themes. Their puppets range in style from classic to modern and they use music and special effects in their plays in order to create a magical atmosphere. The puppeteers not only operate the puppets, they often appear on stage as actors, alongside the puppets. The company tours festivals in the Russian Federation as well as in other countries. This practice allows them to exchange ideas with other puppeteers, to network, and expose their own works to a broader audience world-wide.

As part of their 70th Anniversary celebration, there was a festive banquet held featuring many performances including ones by folk-art dance groups, as well as songs and dances performed with many styles of puppets, from the theater's extensive historical collection. Carli Castellani, as a special guest, was one of the speakers that offered congratulations to...
