As the days get shorter and colder our landscape changes as well. Here are two songs that invoke the the spirit of the melancholy we feel either alone or with our friends.
First we have Neal Swanger sharing a ditty, "Friends, Laughs, Playing Cards & Booze", about the goings on in much of Minnesota during the dark time of year. What more could one ask for than sharing time with others, singing, drinking and playing games. It is what needs to be done to stay sane in the cold northlands, kudos and good fun song.
Next, enjoy Adam Randall performing "Hope is your Last Visitor". A little reminiscent of Simon and Garfunkel, he weaves a beautiful tune that is a bit sad, though very uplifting at the same time. A very talented singer and songwriter from Clearwater FL., Adam really draws you into his emotions and leaves you feeling that he has shared a personal and lasting musical and lyrical landscape.

Minnesota winters can be rough, so one night in March, I’d had enough…and wrote this song. It’s a simple song, but for me, the simple songs are often the hardest to write. I often find myself waiting for a particular song to come out. When it finally does, simple language and melody come together easily. But, all too often it’s one or the other, or neither and I’m left with a jumble of words and tunes that are hard to piece together.
Songwriting for me, is a way to grapple with a frustrating feeling or admire a beautiful one. Who says that feeling can’t be both? Fifteen inches of snow can have us tearing our hair out here in Minnesota (especially in March), but a snow day can’t be any better spent than snowed in with friends and a deck of cards. Don’t forget the whiskey hot toddies.
