It all started when her big brother gave Jessi her first graffiti magazine. It was love at first sight. She sat down, tacky markers and computer paper in hand, and drew non-stop until mastering every single letter and color. In high school, she graduated to paint and canvas. In college, she picked up the can and a particular interest in the subject-artist relationship/perspective. And now, here she is, still at it.
Jessica Sabogal is a first generation Colombian American graffiti artist, hip-hop dancer, photographer and President-in-Training. Inspired by the rhythm of a drumbeat, the body in motion, and the stories less told, Jessi seeks to undo the taboo reputation of the spray can while making art that incites action, inspiration and appreciation. Born and raised in San Francisco, Jessi currently resides with her partner in Northampton, MA, musing, creating and applying to grad schools. She received a BA in Political Science from University of California, San Diego. You can find more of her work at: jessicasabogal.wordpress.com. Jessica's art and methods appear in the June, 2010 issue of Status Hat: WORK
