This month we have three distinct selections for our "Cities" issue. As we find music from around the country and world, so many different styles and approaches to expression are brought to our attention. Like different cities, they each have their own flavor and attitude.

First we have Tali Ratzon sharing with us "Dance with Me", a very sensual and soothing Latin inspired song. With a great band backing her up, Tali effortlessly conveys the passion and romance of dancing close enough to feel the breath of her partner. This song is a nice example of a musician clearly creating a mood and allowing the listener to flow right along with it.

Next up is Big Block 454 and the song "The Modern Architrave". Around since the 80's they really capture a new wave feel of that era. Steady and very danceable, this track bops along like a well tuned BMW, not quite like the monster Chevy engine that their name reflects. Original member Colin Robinson teams with his mates to create this catchy and eclectic song outside the realm of a standard rock song, especially with a quirky carnival ending.

Last we have the talented 20 year old Nate Gross "Livin' the Good Life". He has a natural song-writing gift, and the upside to his music career is bright. This song has a very familiar and breezy feel, and has many elements that will resonate with a large audience. When he comes out with a full production album, (or another artist using his published material), Nate Gross just might be a name we all hear much more from.

You can listen to these songs on our pop-out player for this month, or below, alongside more information about the musicians and where to find more of their work!

***Also, new this month, we've gathered all our featured musician's into one spot, with their music and links here: 2011 FEATURED MUSICIANS! Musicians featured previously on Status Hat will be added soon!

Thanks for listening! If you know a musician we should showcase in a future issue, or are one, send us a link where we can hear their music or yours online!

TALI RATZON

LISTEN TO TALI RATZON:

Dance With Me

ABOUT TALI RATZON:

New York City native Tali Ratzon first picked up guitar at eighteen and has been writing music ever since. In August '09, Tali moved back to the East Coast (after five years in Boulder, Colorado) to start a band and fully pursue a career in music. She has since joined forces with a group of talented musicians to help build on her dynamic compositions. Tali's music is eclectic and sensual, incorporating Middle Eastern melodies, Latin rhythms, and elements of Reggae. While the melodies are unique, her words are true to the universal life experiences that we share.

Tali RatzonTali and her band create an extraordinary live experience, vibrant with energy, each song diverse in texture. Some of the songs are soft and intimate, building in intensity, while others have fluctuating tempos and rhythms that take the crowd by surprise. This is a performance you definitely want to check out!

Tali's Band: Tali: lead singer/guitarist; Gabe Bendana: guitarist; Aaron Shade: bass; Trevor Gunderson: drums.

Big Block 454

LISTEN TO BIG BLOCK 454:

The Modern Architrave

ABOUT BIG BLOCK 454:

Since the early 80s, Big Block 454 has been making exploratory, highly individual music that encompasses rock, funk, electronica, folk music, Dadaist collage and much more besides. Colin Robinson has been the one constant member since the band’s inception, with Mark Joell and Alex Stone completing the current line-up. Each band member is a multi-instrumentalist, but Big Block 454’s approach also encompasses the creation of sound on instruments they don’t know how to play, and those that hadn’t been invented before the band made them.

Big Block 454Despite the band’s experimental approach, they fully intend their music to be accessible, catchy even. That’s why you’ll find on their new album – Bells and Proclamations – faux-folk songs, glam rock excursions and grand prog-rock motifs alongside ambient chill-out pieces and electro-funk workouts. But it’s the lyrical approach that helps define what Big Block 454 are all about – although the band claims that all the songs ‘mean something’, the lyrics can often be surreal, obscurely poetic or nonsensical at first listening.

“We love it when people tell us what our songs mean to them,” says Robinson. “Often the meaning they find in our music differs from our intention, but that’s fine.”

Two years in the making, the new album will be released primarily as a download, with an accompanying book of artwork, and the band is gradually making its complete back catalogue available for download from its Bandcamp page.
