Not owning a car, and relying on public transportation, they were at the mercy of someone else's schedule. If she could distract him long enough in the morning, delay him, especially the mornings when he tried to catch the earlier bus, he would miss it, and come home again for another twenty minutes until he had to leave again to catch the next one. The right one. Then she could let him go.
